The Zika Virus and Puerto Rico

The Zika virus is here.  I have seen absences in our classrooms because of various tropical diseases, but this new one is more worrisome because of its association with birth defects.

Facing tropical diseases is one of the challenges that we face on the mission field.  We are facing it, but your prayers for our health and safety are appreciated.

Here is a good overview of the situation:

'Zika has shaken us to our core': Puerto Rico prepares for the worst as epidemic looms

We started praying for Puerto Rico when Zika was first in Brazil news. praying for young women of child-bearing years especially. praying for women in your classes and in churches and in the general population. praying for the next generation of school children which may find a school system overwhelmed by the needs of microcephaly students in poor areas. (is most of puerto rico impoverished or just pockets?) Our God is Mighty.

Thank you, Sheryl, for you prayers. We have daughters living in the tropics, so we are concerned about this on a personal level.

About the poverty question: There are definitely pockets of extreme poverty. The Puerto Rican economy is about half of the poorest state in the US, usually Mississippi. But we have a larger middle class than most of the countries in our region, so the disparity is not so stark as it is in most countries down here. I just posted a new blog article about this with a link to a good article that explains it better.
